About Lahaul Valley
The mountainous region of Lahaul lies between the green alpine slopes of Kullu-Chamba valleys and the dry, arid plateau of Ladakh. This wonderland of Lahaul too has an array of interesting places to visit. The Rohtang La at an altitude of 13054 feet(3979 m) cuts off Lahaul from Kullu valleys. After Manali, once you cross the Rohtang La, after Gramphu and Khoksar the route leads to Leh via Lahaul region. On this Manali-Leh Highway, you can drop in by typical Lahuali charming small villages like Keylong, Sissu, Jispa.
Unlike the barren land of Spiti region in Lahaul region it rains enough during the monsoon season. So it helps an extensive terrace cultivation of Potatoes, green peas, hops, cabbage and some exotic vegetables and herbs. In fact, Lahauli potatoes are some of the best in the country. It is believed that these crops have brought prosperity to Lahaul.
In Lahaul you will find a unique amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist culture, customs and architecture.
Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul. It is a perfect base to visit the Buddhist monasteries around such as ;Guru Ghantal Gompa, Kardang Monastery, Shashur Gompa, Tayul Monastery, Gemur Monastery, etc.
Some other important places to visit in Lahaul are Triloknath temple, Mrikuladevi temple, Temple of Raja Ghepan, Lahaul and Spiti Valley Museum, cave Dzong Gompa (Tino) and Yardong Monastery, the 108 room palace fort of Khangsar that is located in a small village above the Manali-Leh highway.
Serene lakes like Suraj Taal and Deepak Taal can fascinate the adventure freaks.
As mentioned above, it rains adequately in this region; you must consider the weather conditions before you plan your journey to Lahual. In winter season this entire region is covered with snow. So the best time to travel is from May till late October.
